The Elizabethan cobbled streets of Hawkshead, lined with whitewashed cottages and courtyards is mainly pedestrianised and so offers a pleasant amble around the church and the old Grammar school where Wordsworth carved his name on a desk. Just 3 miles over the hill from Hawkshead is Satterthwaite set amidst Grizedale Forest, with its excellent visitors centre, offering pre-bookable activities including Go Ape but also offering disabled access through many of their forest pathways.
