Accommodation overview: Loughrigg Holme sits underneath the much loved fell of the same name and was once the home of Wordsworths daughter, Dora and her husband Edward Quillinan, Rich in literary history connections, visitors to Loughrigg Holme have included Charlotte Bronte, the poet Matthew Arnold and Harriet Martineau. This chocolate box property,originally a farmhouse, built in 17th century and extended in the early 19th century is a beautiful example of a traditional Lakeland residence, her 2 1/2 acres of gardens and fellside including croquet lawn blending effortlessly into the slopes of Loughrigg and displaying a wealth of ancient shrubs and flora, cleverly married with more formal patio, lawn areas and natural water fall. A short stroll directly under Loughrigg Fell will bring you to beautiful Rydal Water, one of Lakelands smallest lakes at only ¾ mile long and ¼ mile wide and a favourite of Wordsworth and many other of the romantic poets and still, to this day, magical, peaceful and most inspiring. Ambleside can also be reached on foot within 20 minutes along a country lane, this bustling village offering numerous attractions and activities for all ages with a wide choice of bars, shops and restaurants. Accommodation overview: Built around 1760, this charming, ancient farmhouse was once part of Lowfold Farm, nestling in a small cluster of older properties on the fringes of Ambleside, set half way between the village and the Lake on the original old road into Ambleside. Some excellent walking can be enjoyed straight from door, the footpath to Jenkins Crag and leading onto Wansfell being literally over the garden wall whilst the delights of this now rather cosmopolitan village are a level 5 minute stroll. Magnificent topiary trees line the huge lawned areas, fringed by colourful displays of rhododendrons and other annuals in deep, accented borders. The setting is idyllic - a herd of deer at dawn or dusk can regularly be seen gently grazing the nearby 2 acres of woodland in which guests are free to explore. Dairy Cottage is also extremely peaceful - but for the sound of running water, the hoot of an owl or the occasional cluck from the chickens who produce the freshest, free range eggs, 1/2 a dozen provided as part of a small welcome pack, courtesy of the owners.
